I used to think of myself as a fairly well-rounded individual. I had a diverse range of interests and was able to interact with most any person on the basis of shared interest or interests. I am now fairly certain that I am not that way and I believe I'm not that way for a combination of two reasons. The first is that I was simply lying to myself. I only believed myself to be multi-dimensional with depth and breadth when in fact I was one-dimensional and flat. The second reason is perhaps something we all fall victim to (since self-deception is something we never fall victim to) and is perhaps the greatest impediment to our personal growth. I am of course talking about comfort. Comfort with the familiar, comfort with what we have and are, and comfort with settling. Is comfort bad? Certainly not. But comfort can often lead us to become stagnant, an principle that goes against our divine nature, yet is so appealing to our physical nature.
I think I may have once been a diverse individual. I have now found that I can describe myself as a guy who likes to play nerdy board games and girly sports. I can listen to "The Lord of the Rings" soundtrack over and over again. I can watch "Arrested Development" over and over again. I can eat potatoe-ham-bake over and over again. Am I fine with that? I certainly am. It's familiar to me. It's comfortable to me. It's what I like to do. But is that really all there is to me? Maybe. Was that all there ever was to me? No. Is that all there ever will be to me? I certainly hope not. It is for this reason that I intend to turn myself into a multifaceted individual. One who is not content with what I have, yet is enhanced by it. One who is going to enjoy what I have, yet strive for more. I wish to be a person that can't be described in a single sentence. I don't want to be boring, to myself or others. I want to be the best version of myself that I can manufacture.
I am happy with what I have and who I am, but that doesn't mean it can't get better. In fact, we all have to get better, we all have to expand, we all have grow. Change is a moral imperative. Not necessarily change from what we are (though sometimes that is the case) but change into the best of what we already are.
So here it goes, let the great experiment begin! What is something new I should try out? What do you suggest I can add to the sparse repertoire that is Nathan? What is something you like to do that you hope or wish others would also do? What is something you love, are passionate about, geek out about, and think someone might feel the same way about? Music, food, hobby, movie, daily routine, brand of pen, brand of chap-stick, recipe, bucket-list item, Youtube video, crazy dream, drunken thought, life ambition, or random-out-of-no-where-what-was-I-thinking thought, I don't care what it is. You name it and I'll try it. And if I don't try it, I'll give you a good reason why I don't.

2 things I geek out about the most, but people won't try...
1. Fullmetal Alchemist and/or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
2. The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud.
That's all I got for now.
I own the Bartimaeus Trilogy. You can borrow it from me.
I geek out about ... Cafe Rio. Not so helpful. Sorry. Apparently, I too should endeavor to become a "multifaceted individual." I kind of like my boring life though.
These suggestions are not specific to you, but rather things I've done that have taught me to appreciate certain things in life...
Write a song - to appreciate what good songwriters can do.
Backpacking in really cold and wintery conditions - I am humbled and amazed by the pioneers.
Skydiving - to conquer fear and feel alive.
Fast from something for a long time that you regularly do - to develop self-mastery and increase clarity of mind.
For a while, and by choice, live with only what you need and not what you want or like - to appreciate the comforts of life.
And lastly, blog twice in the same day.
I don't know how much you read, but I challenged myself to read a nonfiction book for every two fiction I read. I love to read fantasy and scifi and historical fiction, but I wanted to be learning about the real worl too. It was great while it lasted.
Also, I geek out over cool sewing projects. If you really want to challenge yourself, go to Joann's and pick out some fabric, then borrow Megan's sewing machine and make some jammies or a quilt for your bed or a cool bag to hold board game pieces.
Paper.
Notebooks.
Photos.
Treats.
Organization.
Lists.
Growth.
Success.
Castle.
I want to visit Washington D.C. and Holland during tulip season.
I think it would be cool to run a race in all 50 states.
I want to be in one of your movies.
Forget being well-rounded. When you find something you like, pursue it with Passion and dedication. Don't be afraid of appearing absurd. Let your freak flag fly! I think you actually do a pretty good job at this!
